Visakhapatnam, formerly known as Bijagapatnam, is the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is the most populous and largest city of Andhra Pradesh. The city is located between the Eastern Ghats and the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is the third largest city on the East Coast of India and the fourth largest city in South India after Chennai and Kolkata. Visakhapatnam is one of the four Smart Cities in Andhra Pradesh selected under the Smart Cities Mission. The city serves as the headquarters of Visakhapatnam district headquarters. The Eastern Naval Command is headquartered at Visakhapatnam. Araku is located on the Eastern Ghats, about 114 kilometers (71 mi) from Visakhapatnam, near the border with Odisha state. The Anantagiri and Sankarimeta Reserve Forests, which form part of the Araku Valley, are rich in biodiversity and mined for bauxite. The Galikonda Hills rising to a height of 5,000 feet (1,500 m) are among the highest peaks in Andhra Pradesh. The valley spans about 36 km. Hyderabad State or Hyderabad Deccan was an Indian state located in the south-central region of India with Hyderabad as its capital. Currently the state is divided between Telangana state, Hyderabad-Karnataka region of Karnataka and Marathwada region of Maharashtra. From 1724 to 1857 the state was under the rule of the Nizams, who were initially the viceroys of the Deccan or Deccan of the Mughal Empire. Hyderabad became the first native state under British influence to sign treaties of increasing alliance. This state was the richest native state in India.
