Overview
Visakhapatnam, formerly known as Bijagapatnam, is the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is the most populous and largest city of Andhra Pradesh. The city is located between the Eastern Ghats and the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is the third largest city on the East Coast of India and the fourth largest city in South India after Chennai and Kolkata. Visakhapatnam is one of the four Smart Cities in Andhra Pradesh selected under the Smart Cities Mission. The city serves as the headquarters of Visakhapatnam district headquarters. The Eastern Naval Command is headquartered at Visakhapatnam. Araku is located on the Eastern Ghats, about 114 kilometers (71 mi) from Visakhapatnam, near the border with Odisha state. The Anantagiri and Sankarimeta Reserve Forests, which form part of the Araku Valley, are rich in biodiversity and mined for bauxite. The Galikonda Hills rising to a height of 5,000 feet (1,500 m) are among the highest peaks in Andhra Pradesh. The valley spans about 36Â km.
